Buying from a dealer vs. a private seller.
Both can work out. Here are the honest trade-offs, so you can pick the one that fits you and your budget.
The short answer.
A private seller can sometimes be cheaper, but you handle everything yourself: checking the title, arranging payment, the paperwork and any problems after the sale. A dealer adds things a private seller usually cannot, like financing, trade-ins, a history report and a business you can call afterwards.
Neither is automatically better. What matters most is the car itself, its history, and the person selling it. Whichever way you go, read the history report, drive the car and, if you want peace of mind, have it inspected.

Side by side, honestly.
Buying from a dealer
- Financing options, including for bad or no credit
- Trade in your current car in the same visit
- A history report on the listing (ours is free)
- Title and sale paperwork handled at the desk
- Several vehicles to compare in one place
- A business with an address to call after the sale
Buying from a private seller
- Price can be lower, with room to haggle
- You can ask the owner directly about its past
- You arrange the loan, if you need one
- You check the title and any lien yourself
- You sell your old car separately
- Once you pay, there is usually no one to call
Protect yourself either way.
Good habits that work whoever is selling.

Why some buyers prefer us.
Word for word, from Google and Facebook.
We bought a used Tundra a few weeks ago. The buying experience was smooth and easy. We did have some issues with it later (not their fault) and even though we had bought it “as is” Ben handled it and paid for all repairs. He is honest and a really good guy! I would recommend Sports Center Imports to everyone! Thank you Ben!
Purchased an Acura MDX. They are very responsive, even after the sale. No pressure sales tactics..All around great experience.
Hands down the best car buying experience I have ever had in my decades of buying cars. Thank you Fred for being so honest and nice. I had put off buying anything because I hate dealerships and the pressure that starts the minute you walk in the door. You will experience none of that when you work with Fred and Ben at Sports Center Imports.
Dealer or private questions.
Is buying from a private seller always cheaper?
No. Private prices are often lower, but not always, and a lower price can hide costs like repairs or a title problem. Compare the whole deal, not just the sticker.
Can I finance a private sale?
Some banks and credit unions offer private-party loans, so ask yours. The financing options we offer are for vehicles you buy from us; you can apply online.
What paperwork do I need for a private sale in Alabama?
Generally the seller signs the title over to you and you get a bill of sale, then you title and register the car at your county license office. Requirements change, so check with your county license office before you buy.
Are used cars from a dealer sold “as is”?
Many used cars, from dealers and private sellers alike, are sold as is, so ask how any car you are looking at is sold and read what you sign. One buyer in our reviews describes how Ben handled repairs on an as-is truck anyway.
What if I cannot find the car I want from either?
If we don’t have it, we will find it. Our vehicle finder lets you tell us what you are after.
