What a vehicle history report tells you.
Every vehicle we list comes with a free AutoCheck report. Here is how to read one, and where it stops.
The short answer.
A vehicle history report pulls together records tied to the VIN: title brands like salvage or flood, reported accidents, odometer readings, how many owners it has had, and where and how it was registered. It tells you what has been reported about a car, not everything that has ever happened to it.
On our site, the AutoCheck report is free on each vehicle listing. Open it before you call, and bring your questions. A clean report is a good sign. It is not a substitute for a test drive and, if you want one, an independent inspection.

What it shows, and what it can’t.
What a report can show
- Title brands: salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon
- Accidents and damage that were reported
- Odometer readings over time, and rollback flags
- Number of owners and states registered
- Use type: personal, rental, fleet or lease
- Some service and inspection records
What it can miss
- Accidents fixed without an insurance claim
- Repairs done at home or at small shops
- Wear and tear: tires, brakes, interior
- How the car actually drives today
- Events that have not been reported yet
Why flood history matters on the Gulf Coast.
We live in hurricane country. After a big storm, flood-damaged cars can turn up for sale far from where they flooded, sometimes after being titled in another state. A history report can flag a flood title brand and show where a car has been registered, which is one more reason to read it every time.
On the test drive, use your nose and your eyes too: a musty smell, damp carpet, silt under the seats or rust in odd places are worth asking about, whatever the report says. Our test drive checklist has the full list.
How to read one in five minutes
- Check the title section first
- Match the odometer readings to the listing
- Look at where it was registered, and when
- Note any accident: then ask what was repaired
- Compare owners and use type to the car’s age
Buyers who did their homework.
Word for word, from Google and Facebook.
I purchased a 2019 Toyota 4 Runner from Fred and Ben this week and I can honestly say this is by far the best car buying experience I have ever had. They let me test drive it, bring someone else to test drive it, go to lunch and discuss if i wanted it or not and put up with me trying to haggle and talk them down on the price. I have to be fair and say the vehicle was already priced at a very fair price but I had to still try. Fred was very patient with me and all my questions and extremely honest. While I was there my mom sent me another car that cost less. Without knowing what the results of that car fax would be he offered to pull it for me. Most car lots would not be so willing knowing it could cause them to loose a sale. I went in with a price in mind and the monthly payment i wanted and he made it happen. I arrived at 10am and didn't make the decision until almost 3:30pm that I for sure wanted the car. We started the paper work and everything needed to get the loan approved. He could have easily told me he gets off at 5 and I would have to come back tomorrow. He didn't do that, instead he stayed there with me until 6:30 to get everything wrapped up and I was able to leave same day with my car. I never once felt like I was working with a salesman. He wasn't pushy, he didn't try to force me into something I couldn't afford, he was honest and genuine and made me feel very comfortable about the whole process. I would recommend this dealership to anybody looking to buys a gently used well taken care of vehicle. After I got home I noticed that the sticker on the window for when the vehicle should have received and oil change not by much but nobody wants to buy a car and have to get an oil change immediately. I messaged him and inquired he offered to send me the money for an oil change via cash app! You can't get better customer service than that!
I recently purchased a vehicle from Sport Center Imports, and my experience with Fred was excellent from start to finish.Like many buyers, I was a little hesitant about purchasing from a dealership. Fred quickly put those concerns to rest. He was straightforward, respectful, and easy to work with throughout the process.I appreciated that their pricing was transparent and fair. While they don't negotiate prices, the vehicle was competitively priced, and there were no surprises when it came to fees or paperwork. One thing that really stood out to me was Fred's attitude toward a pre-purchase inspection. Not only was he completely supportive of having the vehicle independently inspected, but when the inspection identified a couple of minor items, he immediately took steps to address them. That gave me confidence that he stands behind the vehicles he sells and genuinely wants customers to be satisfied with their purchase. As a woman shopping for a vehicle on my own, I also appreciated that Fred never talked down to me, made assumptions about my knowledge, or tried to overwhelm me with jargon. He answered my questions directly and treated me with respect throughout the entire process.Buying a vehicle can be stressful, but this was one of the most positive car-buying experiences I've had. When it's time for another vehicle, Sport Center Imports will be one of my first stops.
History report questions.
Is the AutoCheck report really free?
Yes. There is a free AutoCheck report on each vehicle listing on our site. Open the listing and use the AutoCheck button.
What is the difference between AutoCheck and Carfax?
Both are vehicle history services that collect records tied to the VIN, from sources like state title offices, insurers and service shops. They draw on somewhat different data, so a detail may show on one and not the other. Some careful buyers check both.
What is an AutoCheck score?
AutoCheck gives each vehicle a score that compares its history to similar vehicles of the same make, model and year. It is a quick guide, but read the details behind it too.
If the report is clean, do I still need an inspection?
It is a good idea. A report only shows what was reported. A test drive and, if you want one, an independent inspection show how the car is today. Ask us when you set up your visit.
The report shows an accident. Should I walk away?
Not always. Ask what happened and what was repaired, and look closely at that area. A minor, well-repaired fender bender is very different from frame damage or a branded title.
Read the report, then drive the car.
