Used SUVs in Daphne, built for real family life.

Room for the carpool, the beach chairs and the dog, and enough muscle to pull the boat to the launch. Here is how to choose a good used SUV, and how to see what is on our lot right now.

Who a used SUV suits.

Most of the SUV buyers we meet are juggling a lot: kids and their friends, ball practice in one town and church in another, a trip to Gulf Shores on the weekend.

An SUV gives you more seats, more cargo room and a higher seat than a sedan. Buying one used lets the first owner absorb the steepest part of the depreciation, which is a big deal on larger SUVs that cost a lot new.

It is not the right fit for everyone. If you drive alone, park downtown every day and never tow, a sedan will usually cost less to fuel, insure and keep in tires. We would rather tell you that than sell you more vehicle than you need. Our used cars page covers that side.

Gray Chevrolet Tahoe on the Sport Center Imports lot

Midsize, full-size or luxury.

Three broad kinds of SUV cross our lot. Knowing which one you need narrows the search fast.

Midsize, two rows

Think Toyota 4Runner or BMW X5. Easier to park and usually lighter on fuel than the big ones, with plenty of room for a family of four. Some have a small optional third row that suits kids better than adults.

Full-size, three rows

Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition. A third row adults can actually sit in, real cargo space behind it, and body-on-frame strength for towing a boat or a camper. They are long, so try one in your own driveway or garage before you commit.

Luxury and off-road

Cadillac Escalade, Jeep Wagoneer, Toyota Land Cruiser. More comfort and features, and more to check on a used one, from air or adaptive suspension to big screens. See our luxury and specialty page for what to look for.

What to check on a used SUV.

Whether you buy from us or anywhere else, these are the things worth a few minutes of your time.

  • Read the history report. Every listing on our site has a free AutoCheck report showing title brands, reported accidents and the number of owners.
  • Look for flood signs. On the Gulf Coast this matters: a musty smell, damp carpet, silt under the seats or rust on seat rails and bolts.
  • Check underneath for rust, especially on SUVs that have backed down salt-water boat ramps.
  • Test the four-wheel drive if it has it. Shift into four-high on the test drive and listen for clunks.
  • Fold every seat, row by row, and make sure the third row latches and releases the way it should.
  • Look at the hitch. A worn receiver or a brake controller under the dash tells you it has towed, so ask what.
  • Compare all four tires. Mismatched brands or uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension work ahead.
  • Run the air conditioning on high in every zone. In an Alabama summer, the rear A/C is not a luxury.

A good used SUV will stand up to a careful look, and to your own mechanic if you want one to see it. We work by appointment, so please call 251-625-2131 to arrange a test drive.

SUV owners, in their words.

Word for word, from Google and Facebook.

I purchased my 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 (black) from Mr. Ben in 2009 when it had roughly 90,000 miles on its odometer. It now has over 400,000 and is easily the best purchase anyone throughout the span of humanity's existence has made.I can't recommend Mr. Ben highly enough.

I purchased a 2019 Toyota 4 Runner from Fred and Ben this week and I can honestly say this is by far the best car buying experience I have ever had. They let me test drive it, bring someone else to test drive it, go to lunch and discuss if i wanted it or not and put up with me trying to haggle and talk them down on the price. I have to be fair and say the vehicle was already priced at a very fair price but I had to still try. Fred was very patient with me and all my questions and extremely honest. While I was there my mom sent me another car that cost less. Without knowing what the results of that car fax would be he offered to pull it for me. Most car lots would not be so willing knowing it could cause them to loose a sale. I went in with a price in mind and the monthly payment i wanted and he made it happen. I arrived at 10am and didn't make the decision until almost 3:30pm that I for sure wanted the car. We started the paper work and everything needed to get the loan approved. He could have easily told me he gets off at 5 and I would have to come back tomorrow. He didn't do that, instead he stayed there with me until 6:30 to get everything wrapped up and I was able to leave same day with my car. I never once felt like I was working with a salesman. He wasn't pushy, he didn't try to force me into something I couldn't afford, he was honest and genuine and made me feel very comfortable about the whole process. I would recommend this dealership to anybody looking to buys a gently used well taken care of vehicle. After I got home I noticed that the sticker on the window for when the vehicle should have received and oil change not by much but nobody wants to buy a car and have to get an oil change immediately. I messaged him and inquired he offered to send me the money for an oil change via cash app! You can't get better customer service than that!

Just bought a 2013 Yukon from Fred. The experience was excellent—no games, fair price, and the truck was exactly as described. It was well worth the drive over from Mississippi. If you're looking for an honest deal on a used vehicle, go see Fred. Highly recommend!

Used SUV questions.

Do you have a Tahoe (or a 4Runner, or a Yukon) right now?

Our stock changes often, so the live inventory list is the honest answer. If the one you want is not there, our vehicle locator service can go find it.

Do I need four-wheel drive on the Gulf Coast?

Plenty of people here drive two-wheel-drive SUVs and never miss it. Four-wheel drive earns its keep on sand, steep or slick boat ramps, dirt roads and hunting land. It also adds weight and parts to maintain, so it is worth matching to how you really drive.

How can I tell if a used SUV was in a flood?

A history report can show a flood title brand, but not every flood car gets one. Use your nose and your eyes too: a musty smell, water lines or silt in the trunk well, corrosion under the dash or on seat bolts, and fogged lights. If anything seems off, walk away or have a mechanic look.

Can my mechanic look at the SUV before I buy?

Call us and we will work out a time. Several of our reviewers mention having their own mechanic inspect a vehicle before they bought it.

Can I trade my car in toward an SUV?

Yes. You can take your trade as credit toward the SUV or simply sell it to us. Start with our trade-in page.
